Lisboa

After Sintra we headed to Lisbon.  We ended up being late for our appointment by 30 minutes; we were late for the renter by 2.5 hrs.  We had a mix up on military time (damn you New Mexico math scores) and felt really terrible for keeping our Airbnb host waiting.  It turns out he was a really nice guy and could laugh about the whole thing.

We went for a walk:

One can tell that Portugal used to be a big deal.  Some of the older buildings are stunning, and everywhere there is a lot of artisan work. Even the sidewalks are mosaics.

We went to a standard bakery for breakfast:

The train station looks like a horse hoof:

We wanted to got to this burned down cathedral, but it was closed.  It looks massive and it's carcass is perched on a hill that is overlooking the main squares of the city.

A main square:

We stumbled upon this church, which burned down in the early 20th century.  They rebuilt the roof but left all of the stone in the burnt, damaged state. It looked really cool:

After walking around we got in the car and drove to the river near the monastery.  The old monastery and cathedral were elaborate:

As always, ceilings are mesmerizing:

Courtyard for the monks:

Symbolically 12 doors for confession (priest entrance):

Next to the monastery was a museum on ships, which I liked:

Interesting write up and artifact...

 "The Fortress of Diu

Founded in 1535. Located at the south of the peninsula of Katiavar, The fortress, owing to its strategic importance, soon became the target of several attacks from our muslim adversaries, until late 17th century.

The fact of having all been repelled, gave the fortress the qualification of unconquerable. The two most violent sieges by land and sea occurred in 1538 and 1546.

In the 18th century, owing to the growing supremacy of other occidental nations and the consequent islamic decay, the importance of Diu declined. An inhabitant of Diu cut the present replica in a stone of the fortress wall in 1894"
